Say Anything Shouts Out Punk Rock Choruses, Waxes Emo Nostalgia for First of Two-Night Metro Run

Radar State Having never heard of or listened to Radar State before this show, there were a few things I learned during their set. 1. This is a band comprised of four dudes who’ve been in a slew of other bands I already knew. 2. These guys brought hilarious stage banter. 3.  One of these familiar-looking guys had already played the Metro at least 25 times in his storied career. All of this makes so much more sense when you consider the band is made up of Matt Pryor and Jim Suptic co-frontmen of The…

Jungle Fills the Metro with Lush Grooves and a Delightful Dance Party

Red Bull In line with the headliner’s name, the venue’s entrance way was decked out in plants, and colorful cartoon owls.  Their cocktail menu even included Jungle Juice, which was served in a series of tiki glasses towards the beginning of the night. Drama Duo Local experimental twosome Drama Duo started the night off with their special brand of happy sad music. With their singer Via Rosa and producer Na’el Shehade. While there was not very much happening in terms of on-stage movement, Via Rosa’s silky smooth vocals lured the…

Aminé and Pell Bring Colorful Confidence to the Metro with Red Bull Sound Select 30 Days in Chicago

Pell New Orleans rapper, singer, writer, and producer Pell performed an exciting set as the supporting act for the night.  Just off the heels of his latest single “Chirpin’,” Pell got the crowd going, starting cheers of “Pell Yeah,” He won the crowd early on with a short, albeit powerful set.  Joined only by his drummer for the majority of his set, Pell’s stage presence was full of classic confidence–the kind you would find from early 90’s rappers commanding attention by fully owning the stage and fostering connection. Even with folks…

Syd Brings Understated Sexiness to the Metro with Red Bull 30 Days in Chicago

New Zealander Bailey Wiley kicked off a night of female-focused talent with a lively set.  With her set in full swing, a couple clipboards  circulated, requesting doodles and depictions of Syd’s song lyrics.  As her first ever show in Chicago, she won the audience over with a cover of Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone,” pulling people’s faces away from their phones to sing along.  She brought energy, excitement, and crowd engagement, inspiring those who didn’t already know her to check her out.  People jammed out to DJ Sahar Habibi, who infused life into…

French/Cuban Twins Ibeyi Inspire the Metro as Part of Red Bull 30 Days in Chicago

Koda opened up the night.  The tiny guy with a bigger voice hit his high notes, while his bassist and guitar player seemed to enjoy themselves while keeping a low profile throughout the set.  The singer/guitarist had two mics, one for his unaltered singing voice and another for a more distorted voice. Chicago local theMIND kept a pretty interactive set, starting with shoutouts for people who knew him and those who don’t, whom he affectionately referred to as his “new friends.”  He kept trying to get the crowd involved, encouraging…

Whitney, Ne-Hi, and Mt. Joy Rock the Metro for Night 2 of Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days in Chicago

Night two of Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days in Chicago was incredibly impressive from start to finish.  The sold-out Metro show featuring Whitney, NE-HI, and Mt. Joy united the indie folk scene’s rising stars. The Red Bull team decked out the Metro with some old-school TV displays advertising other shows on their 30 Days in Chicago lineup, including upcoming shows for The Internet’s Syd and soulful duo Ibeyi.  It wouldn’t be a Red Bull show without some Red Bull cocktails to give fans wings for this late weeknight show.…

Mt. Joy Feature from Night 2 of Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days in Chicago

I caught up with Mt. Joy when they opened for Whitney and NE-HI at night 2 of Red Bull Sound Select’s 30 Days in Chicago.  If you haven’t heard of them yet, you’ll want to (think The Lumineers or The Head and The Heart).  Until last week, they only had four songs on Spotify, but they’ve already played Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo.  While the band is named after a mountain by guitarist Sam Cooper’s childhood home, their genuinely blissful set brought another meaning to their band name.  They are hitting the…

Goldlink brings At What Cost Tour to a Sold Out Metro with Masego

Last night the Metro was taken over by D.C.’s GoldLink and Virginia’s Masego. The venue was almost immediately packed as doors opened, the stage dressed with foliage and a backdrop of freight containers. As the crowd filled in, you could hear whispers of which song GoldLink would be playing. There was a lot of talk of Masego and his incredible live performances, and as he took the stage at 7:45, the night began. Masego: After a short DJ set, Masego emerged to perform Shut Up and Groove off his Pink Polo…
