On the Radar: Eminem talks new LP, Grammy Nominations, DMX covers a holiday classic + More

What’s on our radar this week? DMX’s crazy cover of a holiday classic, Eminem’s new album, Grammy nominations, Chicago’s Purple Tokyo, and more.

Eminem reveals the release date for ‘Revival’

The wait is over. Last week, Eminem finally revealed the release date for his highly anticipated LP, Revival. The new album drops December 15, so luckily, we won’t have to wait long. The news was revealed on Dr. Dre’s Instagram account. He posted a fake ad for a prescription drug with the release date tacked on at the end.

Hopefully, before it drops Em will release another single to give us a taste of the record. So far, he’s only given us the ballad “Walk on Water” featuring Beyonce. He performed the new track on Saturday Night Live with Skylar Grey filling in for Beyonce. He followed this up with a mashup of “Love the Way You Live” and “Stan.”

2018 Grammys nominations revealed; Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack

It’s that time of year again. The nominations for the 2018 Grammy awards have been revealed. Unsurprisingly, Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z have the most nods. Hova scored a total of eight nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Meanwhile, Bruno Mars earned six nominations and Kendrick Lamar got a total of seven. All three artists will compete with each other for the Album of the Year. Others in the category include Childish Gambino and Lorde.

Late singers, Chris Cornell and Leonard Cohen are nominated for Best Rock Performance alongside Foo Fighters, Kaelo, and Nothing More. Other notable nominees include Queens of the Stone Age for Best Rock Album, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee for “Despacito,” Gorillaz, Arcade Fire, Khalid, Lady Gaga, and Pink. Check out all the nominees here.

You can stop searching for a new favorite holiday tune because DMX has you covered. Last week, the rapper released a proper recording of his “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” cover. He originally joked about covering the track during a radio interview five years ago and gave us a taste of what it would sound like.

Now, you can listen to this bonkers, but awesome, cover with growls and barking included. The track can be found on Spotify’s holiday playlist, which also includes new holiday tunes from Demi Lovato, Sam Smith, Miley Cyrus, and Rostam. You can watch his throwback cover above.

Chicago Artist Spotlight: Purple Tokyo

If you’re looking for electronic music that gets you dancing and sounds like it comes from another dimension, you have to check out Purple Tokyo. Hailing from Pilsen, these two brothers mix sounds from their Mexican-American experience along with their love of vaporwave, new wave, house, and reggaeton. The results are songs that will get you moving but sound like they’re from another world. Just listen to “Blasphemy” and see if it doesn’t sound like it’s from a weird, futuristic world.

Their latest release is the Latin-infused dance track “Atrapa” featuring Leo Da Don. It cleverly mixes traditional Latin dance music with intense electronic beats. Listen to it and try to stop yourself from dancing. Their latest album, Deities, is available now. Check it out and grab a copy here.
