Photos: Moonchild and Akenya bring the soul to the Chop Shop

As a lover of soul music, I truly felt both at peace and at home at the 1st Ward / Chop Shop. Multi-genre artist, Akenya, who’s been featured on tracks with other Chicago talents like Saba, Noname, and Chance the Rapper opened the show with a masterful compilation of original material that will for sure get you in your feelings and covers of neo-soul artists like Jill Scott. Moonchild brought the soul vibes as well as they performed tracks from their third full-length album, Voyager. Moonchild have worked and collaborated alongside acclaimed names in the soul-jazz crowd including Stevie Wonder, India.Arie, and The Internet to name but a few. Flutes, saxophones, synthesized piano, and Badu style vocals brought under one roof never sounded so good. Attending and capturing these soulful performances on stage has been without a doubt a memory that for sure never depart from my memory.
