North Coast Music Festival 2016 – Review

Nestled in Union Park, North Coast Music Festival is the approachable, easygoing cousin of Chicago festival beasts like Lollapalooza and Spring Awakening. Featuring a broad bill of notable EDM, indie and rap artists, attendees are pulled together to celebrate great music – no matter the genre. The setup of the festival is a little claustrophobic. There are four stages, 3 outdoor and one indoor, which resembles an enclosed igloo and/or ice arena but in a warmer, sweatier and sandier fashion. As one might predict from an all ages event, the…

LANY Interview: Mamby on the Beach

There’s something particularly endearing about a band in its infancy, and LANY is no different. As I sat with Paul Klein, Jake Goss and Les Priest of LANY (pronounced LAY-NEE) on the lakefront before Saturday’s set at Mamby on the Beach, their relaxed demeanor and welcoming smiles reflected the carefree nature of their music. Formed in March of 2014, LANY is a poppy, alternative band that reminds you of your first love and your last heartbreak. Their relatable lyrics have allowed them to develop a large and loyal following that…

Chrome Sparks Interview: Mamby on the Beach

Dressed in white, with a cold beer in hand, Brooklyn-based performer Chrome Sparks a.k.a Jeremy Malvin spent a few moments winding down after his performance at Mamby on the Beach on Sunday. Malvin, who got his start as a DJ here in Chicago stuck around after his set for an interview. Known for his unique ability to meld driven beats with synthesizers and effortlessly smooth dance vibes, Malvin creates music that is both sophisticated and sexy – despite his most widely recognized song being titled “Marijuana.” How has your background…

Mamby on the Beach 2016: Festival Recap

Mamby on the Beach isn’t just a festival – it’s a refuge. Beautiful people, unending music and two days of sunshine served as the perfect backdrop for a pseudo-vacation from the grime and chaos of Chicago. I seriously needed a vacation, too. I drank beers with my toes buried in the sand, did yoga under the trees, watched fireworks under the stars, and danced until my calves were sore. I laughed with strangers and, most importantly, watched some of my favorite performers from just a few feet away. Sometimes you just need…

Soaking It Up at Mamby on the Beach

Everyone expects the first year of a festival to be a catastrophe. There’s no way to gauge how successful it will be, really. We just buy our tickets and cross our fingers, hoping for some sort of divine intervention from the festival gods. Standing listlessly on the sidewalk in Chinatown searching for the scheduled shuttle to take me to Mamby on the Beach, the latest addition to the Chicago festival scene, I couldn’t help but wonder if its absence was a premonition of the disorganization and disaster to come. Dozens…

Positive Vibes from Autograf at Mamby on the Beach

The members of Autograf are known for putting on a notably unique live show. Armed with marimbas and charisma, this group perfectly echoed the feel-good beach vibes at Mamby on the Beach this past weekend. Although their set was early on in the day, a steady stream of people flooded onto the beach to see Autograf, barefoot and optimistic despite the stormy weather. Sound issues temporarily marred their otherwise polished performance, but as the drunk girl next to me slurred: “That’s the beauty of a live show!” Let’s start by having each…
