Shooting at T.I. Concert

On May 25th, a mass shooting occurred at the T.I. concert at Irving Plaza in New York. According to police and witnesses, the gunman opened fire inside the VIP green room, where acts wait to go on stage. At this time, it is reported that four people were shot and that one of the victims has died from his the gun wounds. Witnesses have stated that gunfire rang out for several minutes as the crowd screamed and ran for cover in the packed facility. Although metal detectors were set up at the concert venue, some are saying that the security protocol was lax.

Hip-hop artists Maino and Uncle Murda were performing when the sudden shots rang out, sending hundreds into a frenzy. A witness stated that it started as an argument between two rival crews associated with Maino and rapper Troy Ave. The gunman and the victims were all credentialed guests with access to the VIP area. Among those shot were a 34-year-old man who was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old man who was shot in the stomach. The unidentified man who was shot in the stomach later died after he stumbled downstairs from the VIP area. T.I.  was scheduled to take the stage next, however, he did not perform. Concert-goers trampled one another trying to escape the venue. Some even used each other as shields to escape injury during the assault. Police say that a 34-year-old man is in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the chest and a 26-year-old woman is in stable condition at Bellevue with a gunshot wound to the leg.

“Gunshots just went off at the T.I concert, never been so scared in my life,” said Marco on his twitter account (@markygeezy) today on May 26, 2016. The tweet was accompanied by video footage from the shooting and resulting scatter of the crowd linked here.

Another victim, identified as rapper Troy Ave., was also shot in the leg and is expected to make a recovery from his injury. A witness identified as Johnny Wilkins, 28, was in the green room. “It was a fight over a push, it was over some b——. It was like 50 or 60 people in the VIP room. It was crazy. It’s crazy more people didn’t get shot,” Wilkins stated.

According to police, the shooter was able to escape and no arrests have been made yet at this time.
