Rising from the ashes of Chicago’s indie-rock band The New Diet comes Longface. Made up of ex-The New Diet members Glenn Curran, Dillon Kelley, and Anthony Focareto and House of Normandie’s Kain Marzalado, Longface is ready to take Chicago’s alternative music scene by storm with its ambitious debut EP, The Life & Death of Longface.

The EP’s lo-fi aesthetic is reminiscent of The New Diet’s last album, 2014’s Basement Minded Thoughts. However, there’s an increased focus on pop sensibilities, which is a bit different from the typical post-punk band (or “post-Dad rock,” as Kelley attributes the band’s sound). I could go on about deconstructing genres and sub-genres, but the true highlight of The Life & Death of Longface is the conceptual narrative of the titular Longface character.

Propelled by Focareto and Curran’s attempts at diversifying the band’s songwriting by experimenting with character perspectives, The Life & Death of Longface is a rundown of Longface’s young adult life leaving the farm town he grew up in for a chance to make it big as a musician in the city. However, after falling in love and impregnating Pachoulia, the two settle down back at the very farm he strived to escape to start their family. The Life & Death of Longface may be a misnomer, as there’s sure to be more to be told about Longface’s life, perhaps framed within prequel and sequel releases. Whatever the case may be, the EP showcases some of Focareto’s and Curran’s best lyrics to date as they take advantage of the freedom creating characters presents to them.

Longface will be celebrating their successful mini-East Coast tour and The Life & Death of Longface‘s release tonight at the Subterrean. Released on cassette by Already Dead TapesThe Life & Death of Longface will be available for $5. Supporting Longface will be fellow Already Dead Tapes artists Daymaker and Teen Cult.
