G. Love and Special Sauce made their way back to Chicago to support their new album “Love Saves The Day” and this time they brought along Ripe to open up the night. Ripe is a funk/rock band hailing from Boston. To see them perform live is a fantastic experience in itself. They began the night with little fanfare from the crowd, but as soon as they got well into their first song of the set, the crowd was hooked. They were able to engage the entire crowd and had everyone grooving and shaking to every word sang and every note played. Robbie Wulfsohn, lead singer, has a cool and calm persona and a voice that captures the spirit of Funk. This 7 member group will have you looking forward to seeing them the next time they roll into town.
After Ripe finished their set, the fans were eager for G. Love to take the stage. G. Love and Special Sauce arrived soon after and began the night getting the fans familiar with their new album. “Love Saves the Day” sounds very familiar in the fact that Garrett Dutton, Jeffrey Clemens, and Jim Prescott stuck to what they know from their previous work and made a solid new album. The album has a lot of help from some talented artists, but how it translates live is what a true G. Love show brings. With songs like “Love Saves The Day”, “New York City”, and “Baby Why You Do Me Like That?”, the first set was a hit among the crowd. Garrett came out by himself for the 2nd set to play requests from the meet and greet before the show. It was a nice touch to show that he loves to cater to the fans and he appreciates everyone in attendance. After a short solo set Clemens and Prescott came back out and that is when they dug into their library. At one point they even brought out Robbie, Josh Shpak (trumpet), and Calvin Barthel (trombone) of Ripe to lend their talents for a couple songs. The crowd went nuts when G. Love played songs like “Booty Call”, “Who’s Got The Weed”, and “I-76”.
All in all fans were treated to a solid night of Funk, Hip Hop, and Blues. Ripe is poised to make it big with steady touring and building a solid fan base, which if Thursday night was any indication, they are well on their way. G. Love put on a solid show and that is what the fans have come to expect. The House of Blues was blessed with another great night of music!
