Bob Weir brings a Dead on solid show to the Chicago Theatre

Bob Weir

Bob Weir has been gracing the stages of countless venues for more than 50 years as a solo act as well as in multiple bands. Most notably The Grateful Dead. This performance was packed with 3 different generations of fans and it was something you don’t see at shows much these days. For fans, this was a unique set that would jump all over the place. Even with all of that, a large portion of fans were very preoccupied for much of the show due to the fact the Cubs were playing the Dodgers in the NLCS. That did not deter or sway Weir and Co. from putting on an extensive and memorable night.

The first set was giving fans a look at his solo work. The night began with Weir performing solo, starting off the night slow and build throughout the rest of the night. He sprinkled in a couple of songs by the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan during the first set. The overall feel during that time was mellow, but also happy.

The 2nd set is where the party truly started.  The Cubs had won by this point and the fans that were previously distracted by the game were focused. Fans were treated to a healthy amount of songs by the Grateful Dead as well as Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, and Son House. By now you could look in every direction in the theater and see that everyone was on their feet dancing and soaking in all that surrounded them. The songs that really got the crowd going were “Friend of the Devil”, “Mama Tried”, and “Stella Blue”.

By the time the encore began, it was already after midnight and it seemed like not one person in attendance had left. We were treated to a few more songs to close out the night and the final show of Weir’s Campfire tour. The energy never receded and fans gave Weir a proper send off. No matter how you feel about classic rock, blue grass, blues, or jam band music, this show gave you a sense that you were witnessing a piece of history.
